Interview: Kerri O’Connell From GOOD WOOD NYC

IF YOU HAVE NOT HEARD OF GOOD WOOD NYC, I’M HERE TO HELP YOU AND DIRECT YOU THERE!!! BECAUSE YOU ARE MISSING OUT!!

You can always tell when someone is passionate about their craft and takes the time out of their busy schedule  for regular people like myself. My first encounter with GOOD WOOD NYC was back in april. My first ever order was the ak-47 pendant. I literary wore it everyday until i accidentally ran into a door and it yanked off. I briefly contacted Kerri and she was so helpful in assisting and I instantly became a GOODWOODNYC  support for life. Not just because she is a cool person its because her accessories are one of the best, and the concept is dope.

Wood   and hip-hop accessories? yup, thats the DOPENESS of GoodwoodNYC. shying away from the typical gold,platinum,cubic zirconia, and the blood diamonds, why not be environmental friendly? Wood not only makes paper it makes GOOD WOOD.

I sent in a couple questions to Kerri and this is what she had to say:

 q:Alot of people know Kerri as the creator of good wood nyc, but for those who don’t who is kerri ?

a:I’m a artist and designer originally from Queens NY. I started carving cool stuff out of wood about 2 years ago and now I do it everyday.

q:My first ever Goodwood NYC purchase was in April and ever since that  i’ve been telling my friends about GWNYC .What do you think the attraction once people get to know GWNYC?

a:People like having something original. Being able to customize the product is a major attraction and also the positive response that comes along with owning something unique and personal.

 

q:the name is genius GOOD WOOD NYC[ because all of the items are made out of wood] what other names did you come up with?

a:It took about a day of thinking, I wanted it to rhyme and to sum up the entire brand. Some of the rejects were urban wood, hood wood. I chose Good Wood because it’s plain and simple and can mean whatever you want it to.

q: How did you first come up with the idea of incorporating hip-hop accessories with wood?

a:I used to own a few 1 finger name rings as a kid and always wanted a huge 2-3 finger ring, but the price kinda turned me a:off. I came up with the idea after seeing a friends plain wood ring. I went out and bought a block of wood and started carving out the designs I wanted, mostly inspired by Hip hop and urban jewelry.

q:Does it cost alot to make and what type of wood do you use?

a:The rings and pendants go for about $20-30 retail and are made of basswood.
For custom orders , the price depends on the size and how elaborate the design. I use a variety of exotic woods on custom pieces..bloodwood, zebrawood, lacewood to name a few.

q:I have requested that you make me a jesus piece, what is the craziest request you’ve ever had?

a:I am in the process of making a pendant of an armored polar bear. Which is a polar bear in a suit of armor involving weapons and shielding. Pretty awesome idea.

q:On your site you made a piece for one of the Young Money rappers what other entertainers have you worked with?

a: Most recently I’ve done custom pieces for The Rocketeers, Jasmine Solano, DJ Iron Lyon, Shinobi Ninja. Iv’e also done pieces for Hip hop artists, Hasan Salaam, Lockwise. Some major customs are coming up within the next month.

q:What can we look forward to the next month or year from Good Wood Nyc?

a: I’m making more elaborate pieces for the product line, which will be available through Goodwoodnyc.com, and select boutiques and shops.Also brand new collaborations are in the works.

q: Have you collaborated with any of the brands ?

a:So far we’ve made accessories for BBP, TooFly, Strictly Fitteds and 51st State.

q: If you had to choice of out the many pieces or customized orders which one is your favorite?

a:I’m recently doing pieces using the Gucci link design and adding custom pendants to it. As of now that is my favorite design. Also my train car 3 finger is one of my favorites.
